Native from Culiacan Sinaloa, Mexico, in a very early age, Sergio lives in Guadalajara, Jalisco, he m architecture studies in the “University of Guadalajara”. Attracted by the plastic arts and the art crafts, in 1966 he focused in painting and “Mache” paper sculpture, having in the same year his first art exposition in Misrachi gallery from Mexico city.
During 1972 and 1973, he established in Amsterdam, Holland, giving him the work of painting and design. In his return in 1975, with some others artists, he founded the group “Estudios, Taller, Familia” in Tlaquepaque Jalisco. He realized art expositions in Ambriz Gallery, of Valle de Bravo, in the Gallery pro-arte of Mexico City, so like expositions in Chicago and New York of painting and sculpture.
1979 he worked wood and bronze sculptures presenting expositions in Houston, Sacramento, Hartford and Seattle in the USA. In 1979 he put up a furniture-sculpture line, in wood and silver. In 1980, with the topic “some man and his works”, he presents an exhibition in Montreal, Canada and founded the gallery Sergio Bustamante in Tlaquepaque Jalisco and he opened an exposition in the “design and art center” in Monterrey Nuevo Leon.
In 1982, he establishes a permanent place in the Meridium House, in Washington D.C., and presents a showing of his works in Fiesta Americana Hotel of Guadalajara city. In the same year he founds in Tlaquepaque the company Arts and Art crafts.
In 1983 he got permanent places in galleries from Chicago, USA and Puerto Vallarta Jalisco. He presents exhibitions in cities as Acapulco, Matamoros, Cancun and Mazatlan, Mexico.
In 1984 it establishes the second gallery, Sergio Bustamante in Acapulco, Guerrero. He develop new techniques in “papel mache”, as the paper pasta, for giving to his works a new perspective in texture and color. In 1983 he presented his works in Los Angeles, New York and Washington; it opens the Boston Gallery. He started to work with ceramic sculptures with a new turn, creating works with new dimensions.
The National Museum of the Mask in San Luis Potosi, in Mexico, presents in 1986 a Bustamante Exposition with the topic of masks. The Institute Cultural Cabañas organizes a retrospective in his works, he begins the bronze sculpture.
In 1987 he opens in Boca Raton, Florida a gallery, it edits the book, “the Mexico of Sergio Bustamante” with texts of the outstanding of Juan Jose Arreola writer, photography’s of Clint Clemens and Tyler Smith design. The same year he carries out the project of the bronze sculpture in the Guadalajara Zoo. He presents his new collection “Nahuales”, in the blue gallery of Guadalajara. It opens the galleries of the Mexico City (Nikko Hotel) and in Puerto Vallarta.
In 1988 he establishes the Gallery Sergio Bustamante en Palm Spring, California.
1989 they open the galleries in Toronto, Canada, Berlin, Germany, La Joya, California, EU and Tokio, Japan, with this last one motive, it edits a book about his work with photographic of Shingo Yoshino. In this year he introduces the silver jewelry with gold plated and presents an exposition in the cultural center of Monterrey, N.L. he creates the Art Gallery company, “Arte en Joyas y Artesanias”, S.A. de C.V, having to the date 7 galleries in the Mexican republic.
In 1990 it opens the gallery of San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato and galleries in Vancouver-Canada, in Madrid-Spain and Zurich. The tourism Secretary of the Jalisco Government edits a book about the book of Sergio Bustamante. A tribute surrenders to him during “Las Fiestas de Octubre” of Guadalajara in “el Cultural Cabañas”, he creates the company “El Arte en la Artesania de Jalisco”, S.A. de C.V. ordered in the distribution, production and exportation of pieces.
In 1991 he opens a gallery in the “pink zone” of Mexico city and the gallery from Ensenada, Baja Cal. Opened its doors and Ixtapa Zihutanejo, Gro. Too.
In 1992 it opens the jewelry store in Puerto Vallarta, he presents the jewelry line of “papel mache” and silver and silver and the ceramic collection. The company “Production splash” opens in Barcelona the gallery with his works. Also the Xaman Ek of Garza Garcia in Nuevo Leon Mexico gallery. Its jewelry line is presented by the sanctioned jewelry line “Fred” in Beverly Hills, Cal. And Houston Texas.
In 1994 it opens galleries in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as in Uruguay, Punta del Este. In Mexico the third one it is open in Puerto Vallarta Jalisco and in he cities of Puebla and Cancun.
In 1995 it opens a new gallery in San Antonio, Texas and Paris, France. With the name of “Escenarios”, he presents a ceramic line. He realizes two pieces of sculptures in great scale, with the title “Agave-Sol” for the Casa Cuervo, tequila Company, that are exhibit in Tequila Jalisco and in Mexico City. In a wish of foster and broaden the Mexican art, in September in 1996, Sergio opens in Tlaquepaque Jalisco the Gallery of “arte Contemporaneo”, with the objective of offering a forum where the principal tendencies of current art are presented, in our country. Later in December in the same year, its opens the second art gallery in Cabo San Lucas, Baja California and in February and in 1997 in Puerto Vallarta. In all the cases the galleries are located in the same places of the galleries the exhibits permanently the works of Sergio Bustamante. Sergio Bustamente more than a creator of a magic world, is a man with a practical sense of life, Wire combination that it is not frequently in artist life.
It looks like he doesn`t want to waste any moment. Each second has a sense, but he still has the gift of the spontaneity. Sergio Bustamante has magic and the charming wish is reflected from some of his characters. In 1998 it is exhibited the play “la inutil permanencia” in some cities of Mexico.
2000 it is donated the bronze sculpture “ En Busca de la Razon” to the Vallarta’s municipality, in Jalisco Mexico, which it is exhibit in the jetty.
